Joey Tensley’s 2018s are fabulous. The wines were compelling from barrel last year and are every bit as magnificent in bottle. Readers will have an amazing time exploring the essence of site through this range. As always, the Syrahs are done with mostly neutral oak, with the exception of the OGT, BMT and Noir, which have some new oak influence. The Colson Canyon Syrah is the highlight, while the Sta. Rita Hills bottling is the under the radar gem. I would be thrilled to own any of the 2018s.

Joey Tensley’s 2017s are terrific, but the 2018s are off the charts gorgeous. The 2017s are racy, pliant and less forbiddingly tannic than in the past, while also retaining terrific freshness, which Tensley attributes to the end of the drought cycle and a return to more normal conditions. I found the 2018s to be hugely promising. It was a late harvest, in some cases two months later than 2017. The 2018s are incredibly harmonious for young wines and are simply mind-blowing in their beauty.
