When it comes to delicacy, harmony and balance, few producers can match the subtle elegance that Willi Schaefer and his son Christoph impart to their rieslings. Not only that, their wines age very gracefully, often impressing me more after ten years in bottle than they do in their youth. Two thousand ten is probably another such vintage, with the kabinett, spatlese and auslese from the Domprobst site all bearing traits of the sublime. My only criticism is that they made so little of them. With less than ten acres of vineyards, production is never large, but this was one of the smallest crops in recent history. Most of the wines are likely to be sold out before they arrive in the market.
