"We had better must weights at the beginning of October this year than in 2001," reports Schaefer, "although the 2002 acidity was a bit lower. But in the final analysis, even in the middle of October I just didn't like what I was tasting. There was still some aroma and flavor missing. Then, at the end of that month and the beginning of November, I was finally satisfied. "By then, though, Schaefer admits, the rain had rendered nearly impossible any significant amounts of dry, fine botrytis. He characterizes his 2002s as ideal for early gratification. That said, Schaefer's wines have an excellent track record for graceful maturation in nearly every vintage.
