As Willi Schaefer and his son Christoph slowly doubled their vineyard holdings to ten acres, there were a number of vintages earlier this decade that were perhaps not as thought-provokingly sensuous as the reputation of this small estate would imply. For the last couple of years, though, this property has been firing on all cylinders, with the 2009s-after exceptional 2007s-being the finest I've tasted here in some time. Not only did two kabinetts, a spatlese and an auslese rank in my top ten lists, two of those were the wines of the vintage. As Schaefer makes only 35,000 bottles a year and has a large fan club, these are wines you will have to hunt down. You won't regret the effort.
