2013 Riesling Kanzemer Altenberg Spätlese Alte Reben

Now owned by Günther Jauch, a famous television personality whose grandmother was born a von Othegraven, this estate is beginning to reclaim the prestige it enjoyed a generation ago when its wines were consistently among the finest produced on the Saar. Winemaker Andreas Barth pulled out all the stops in 2011 to herald its renaissance and even in the extremely difficult 2013 vintage showed why the Altenberg vineyard in Kanzem is considered by many to be of equal stature to--or perhaps even better than--the neighboring Scharzhofberg. While the Riesling Kabinett is the purest expression of this vintage, all of the Rieslings here, from the dry Grosses Gewächs to the Trockenbeerenauslese, are first-class.
