This winery, with longtime winemaker Bill Brosseau at the helm, makes as wide a range of regional and single-vineyard Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs as any producer that I know outside of the large Burgundy négociants. That’s impressive, by itself, but even more impressive is the fact that a lot of those single-site wines are made, year in and out, and they are consistently of very high quality. Brosseau is from a grape-growing family and was raised on their 42-acre, organic-certified Brosseau Vineyard, in Chalone, which is one of the most highly regarded in California. I asked him the fairly obvious question, which was “do you think that your roots, as it were, in the vines has helped you to respect each site’s individual personality?” His quick answer was “for sure. It’s tough but if you don’t want to let each vineyard be itself then make your life easy and just do blends.”
