The 2016 Sloan is still in barrel, but it is shaping up to be truly magnificent. Longtime winemaker Martha McClellan gave the 2016 about 55 days on the skins, with about a third of the lots fermented in barrel. Unfortunately I was not able to taste the 2016 Asterisk, Sloan's second wine because the blend had not been finalized at the time of my visit. As for the bottled 2015s, they are every bit as compelling as they were last year from barrel. Sloan remains one of the very top estates in Napa Valley.

Sloan Estate was among the highlights of my Napa Valley tastings this year. Martha McClellan has coaxed every bit of potential out of her 2014s, while the 2015s look very promising. As always, the Sloan Estate wines are dense and richly textured. In vintages that provide some contrast, like 2014, the wines seem a little more interesting than they do in years such as 2015 that accentuated what is already a pretty unctuous house style.
