Martha McClellan continues to craft striking wines for the Pan family at Sloan Estate. Small-lot fermentation in barrel and an absolutely meticulous attention to everything that happens in the vineyard and cellar are some of the cornerstones of the approach here.

Winemaker Martha McClellan has done a fabulous job with these new releases from Sloan Estate. The bottled 2012s are just as impressive as they were from barrel, while the 2013s take things up a notch. As always, McClellan favors long macerations of around 55-60 days, with many of the best lots seeing fermentation in barrel. The wines spent around 27 months in oak, which is on the long side by Napa Valley standards. Because of the longer cycle here, I did not taste any blended 2014s, just single barrels, that, while interesting, can only provide a snapshot of a vintage. Since acquiring Sloan in 2011, proprietor Pan Sutong and his daughter Jenny, who manage the estate, appear to have left things pretty much as they have always been, which means the wines are made in the style that first brought Sloan so much attention. The estate vineyard sits on a plateau with slightly undulating contours above Rutherford and was once part of the historic Sacrashe vineyard.

A month spent in Napa Valley in 2014 ended on a very high note at Sloan Estate. All of the wines I tasted were fabulous. Hong Kong business man Pan Sutong purchased Sloan Estate in 2011. Unlike many new owners who can't resist the temptation to tinker with things, Mr. Pan and his daughter Jenny, who runs the estate, appears to have left things pretty much as they were under Stuart Sloan. The result is a series of stunning wines that capture the best of this remarkable hillside site in Rutherford. Martha McClellan makes the wines in her trademark style. Meticulous sorting, cold soaks, small-lot fermentations in barrel and long elevage by Napa Valley standards are signatures to an approach that seeks richness and textural opulence.

Martha McClellan described the 2012 here as "big and powerful but not like the 2013," adding that the wine reminded her of the estate's 2002. "In 2013," she added, "dehydration dictated our picking schedule." The superrich 2012 was only possible because the estate pares down its crop to between 1.5 and 2.5 tons per acre of fruit, said Sloan. The 2011, which is no slouch with alcohol in the mid-14s, is a more floral, delicate wine that avoids coming off as green. The merlot harvest in 2011 actually began on September 9 (!) but the last cabernet did not come in until the end of October.

Winemaker Martha McClellan handled the 2011 vintage by doing more barrel fermentations than normal because of the small picks and lower overall yields that year. McClellan opted to leave the 2011s on their lees longer than usual and stirred more than normal, the same technique she employed in 1998 at Harlan Estate. Readers can view a short video of the 2011 harvest.
