Winemaker Martha McClellan handled the 2011 vintage by doing more barrel fermentations than normal because of the small picks and lower overall yields that year. McClellan opted to leave the 2011s on their lees longer than usual and stirred more than normal, the same technique she employed in 1998 at Harlan Estate. Readers can view a short video of the 2011 harvest.

According to winemaker Martha McClellan, the Sloan vineyard above the Auberge du Soleil resort in Rutherford "did not get nailed at the flowering" in 2011 but struggled to ripen due to misty weather in September and October. The harvest lasted until November 2, the latest ever, with the team eliminating most of the rotten grapes in the vineyard. But there will be only 45 barrels of wine, vs. 60 in 2010, and some juice may yet be declassified.Like a number of her colleagues in Napa Valley, McClellan noted that the 2011s have been putting on weight in barrel.Meanwhile, the 2010 has delivered on its early promise."It was a very good year and a lot of our wine went into the final blend," said McClellan."The wine is in an elegant style and came around fairly quickly."This spectacular vineyard and showplace winery was purchased in 2011 by Goldin Financial Holdings, a Hong Kong-based conglomerate seeking to provide world-class wines for their Asian clients.

SLOAN ESTATE remains one of the most distinctive wines in Napa Valley. A meticulous approach to farming and small-lot fermentations in oak are some of the many quality-driven decisions that inform winemaker Martha McClellan's approach in crafting these sumptuous wines. It will be interesting to see the direction the Pan family takes in moving the estate forward.

SLOAN ESTATE is one of the most striking properties in Napa Valley. Over the years, this pristine hillside site has yielded a number of stunning wines. Earlier in the year, Stuart Sloan sold the estate to the Goldin Group, a Hong Kong based conglomerate. I was quite surprised when Goldin's Chairman, Mr. Pan Su-Tong and long-time winemaker Martha McClellan decided to show me every vintage of Sloan Estate. Needless to say, it was a great tasting with many highlights, including the stellar 2002 and 2007. Most important of all though, the wines are proving they have the pedigree to age well. Readers who want to get a look at the 2011 harvest at Sloan Estate may want to take a look at the video I shot with Martha McClellan during crush.
