I was relieved to find that Adam and Dianna Lee's 2002 pinots were bottled with lower levels of alcohol than the 2001s. Sugars and flavors went hand in hand in 2002," noted Adam Lee, "whereas in 2001 the sugars spiked higher before the skins got really ripe."The Lees, who recently expanded their cellar space significantly, described the 2002 vintage as one of their easiest harvests, as there were "no heat spikes and no important rain events."The vintage is clearly better than 2001 across much of the Sonoma Coast area, noted Adam, but 2002 was a bit less successful in Monterey and Santa Barbara due to drought conditions during the spring.Ultimately, the 2002s finished in the 13.5% to 14.9% alcohol range, with healthy pHs of 3.55 to 3.6, without any acidification. Due to their higher alcohol levels, noted Adam, the 2001s were more showy early on, but they will be less good in the long run. Siduri's production reached 5,500 cases in 2002; the Lees also bottled 2,500 cases under their Novy label (see notes later in this issue).
