The 2022s at Ronco del Gnemiz are remarkably pretty wines that show the vivid fruit character inherent in this portfolio, yet with grace and finesse that takes them to another level. Christian Patat explained that, while warm, the 2022 vintage was less extreme than 2021. Both are considered warm and dry vintages, but in 2021, producers were forced to pick when sugar levels spiked toward the end of the season. The result was higher alcohol levels, yet balance was achieved thanks to the wines’ elevated acidities. The 2022 vintage didn’t present these same issues, producing sun-kissed wines yet more complex and balanced. For my taste, the lineup of Sauvignon Blanc is on the same level between both years, just with a very different character. As for Chardonnay, I find that the 2022s are wildly successful. In fact, I was overly impressed across the range. One issue with the vintage may be the reds because of a week of rain in mid-September that resulted in delicate skins and hydrated berries. However, on this visit, the 2021 reds on display were fantastic. This is one of the top wineries in all of Friuli, and it still somehow flies under the radar for most collectors. That can only last so long.
