The 2021s at Ronco del Gnemiz are racy and fruit-forward, with a core of vibrant acidity that balances their slightly higher alcohol levels. While they lack some of the refinement and detail found in the beautifully balanced 2020s, the 2021s will instead provide more upfront appeal. Christian Patat explained that 2020, for him, was “an excellent vintage among the last five years.” and that 2021 had “more ups and downs.” This can be witnessed when tasting through the cru Sauvignons and Chardonnays. From my tasting, the Sol vineyard certainly overperformed in this vintage. The reds from 2020 have just been released. Merlot lovers will want to watch for the Rosso Buri Bellaria, a blend of 90% old-vine Merlot and 10% Refosco from a parcel Christian Patat took over from Enzo Pontoni of Miani. Also, the Rosso del Gnemiz Dott. Palazzolo, a blend of 60% Cabernet Franc, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot, possesses tremendous cellaring potential. Hands down, these are some of the best wines being made in Friuli today. Fans of Ronco del Gnemiz should also check out Luigino Balozio wines, which hail from vineyards managed by Patat and are vinified in his cellar.
