This is a superb set of 2022s from brothers Carlo and Dante Mondavi. Sadly, yields are down a punishing 40-50%, mostly because of frost in May. “We had small clusters and tiny berries with thick skins,” Carlo Mondavi explained. The 2022 Pinots are intense, dark wines. As always, the Pinots are done with 100% whole clusters. In 2022, the interplay of huge fruit with intense stem character makes for wines that are beguiling but also need cellaring to be at their best. Time in barrel remains around ten months. I was also deeply impressed with the Chardonnay from the Martinelli family’s Charles Ranch in Fort Ross-Seaview. It’s one of the best 2022 Chardonnays I have tasted so far.
