Andre Ostertag described 2001 as "a fantastic year that produced very harmonious wines that were easy to vinify.We had virtually no rot; even the vendange tardive wines are not nobly rotten."The 2002 growing season, in contrast, was "bizarre."He went on: With no sustained summer heat, the acids were never degraded, and we also had high sugars.The wines are tight, even severe now, and will need time, especially the bigger wines.There was a lot of rot in 2002, but mostly ripe noble rot because our vines are not vigorous.The botrytis concentrated the sugars and acids but not necessarily the soil character and depth of the wines.The 2001s are more profound."Ostertag continues to vinify and age his pinots and the Riesling Heissenberg in barriques with the percentage of new wood varying according to the cuvee
