Martin Nigl’s family used to sell their grapes to the local co-op. Nigl was the one who started making wine, and with his family’s help, he grew the estate, which now includes a hotel and restaurant. Son Martin has joined him in vineyards and cellar while son Bertram runs the hospitality side with daughter Anne also on board. They farm 35 hectares of wine in Senftenberg and Krems, with Grüner Veltliner and Riesling making up 80% of plantings. Sauvignon Blanc and Gelber Muskateller take up around 10% each, while Zweigelt, Pinot Noir and Merlot make up the tiny rest. They favor late harvests but make wines of almost ethereal lightness and svelteness.
