Martin Nigl and his dad have once again teamed up for a magnificent collection of wines. "We had good levels of extract in Senftenberg," Martin narrates. "Because it was quite rainy up until the middle of August, the soil had water in reserve. Up to that point, the vintage was quite like 1996. Then we had two and a half months of total drought. But this was one hot year when the vines in our soils didn't suffer from lack of water. In September in Senftenberg we irrigated once, lightly, but that was it. We haven't had ripeness like this, with perfectly healthy, botrytis-free fruit, since 1990." Happily, the Nigls have been able to add to their holdings in Piri.
