Chad Melville describes 2018 as a year with an even set, no excess heat and a long harvest that lasted 8-9 weeks. The 2018s are super-appealing across the board, just as they were last year when I saw them in barrel. The appellation Pinot is a consistent winner, while the single block Pinots are all distinctive, something that isn't always the case in Santa Barbara when producers bottle numerous selections off the same site. But the best wines at Melville may very well be the Syrahs, which are both terrific in 2018. As always, the Pinots and Syrahs see quite a bit of stem influence and are aged mostly in neutral oak.
