Melville's 2012s are gorgeous. Winemaker Greg Brewer has done a magnificent job with these new releases, starting with the Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir, which may be the best Pinot in the range. The Melville family recently sold their Verna's Vineyard, so those wines will naturally no longer be made. Verna's which is in Los Alamos, yields wines that are very different and frankly less distinctive than those Melville makes in the Sta. Rita Hills, so the sale of the vineyard makes sense. As is often the case, the Chardonnays are bottled with a little bit of reduction and need air, especially if they are opened young.

Winemaker Greg Brewer reiterated the Melville family's belief--as well as his own--that the style of wines here long ago found a groove that they and their extensive group of customers enjoy, and thus there's absolutely no reason to rock the boat."Changes here will always be in small steps," Brewer told me, "because we've had things tuned in for a long time and it never gets boring."One of the recent small steps is the use of a bit of neutral wood for the rose here, which Brewer thinks "helps to round out the fruit without intruding on it, to add a bit more texture and mouthfeel, like you would see in an old-school Sancerre rose."
