The frosts of 2011 took a heavy toll on Melville's chardonnay, Greg Brewer told me, but with the benefit of greater concentration and power.The long, cool 2010 growing season allowed for slow sugar build-up in the grapes, which Brewer said "got a real kick in the pants by the late August heat spikes but not so much that things got too crazy."Brewer has never been scared of high alcohol in his wines and while some of the 2010 pinots do cruise into the 15%+ range I didn't get a sense of heat from any of them.

Longtime winemaker Greg Brewer has done a great job with these new releases. Although there are a number of highlights here, it is the Pinots that truly shine in 2010. I also tasted the 2010 Chardonnay Estate, but it was completely closed down and in no mood to be evaluated, so I will have to wait for another opportunity to get a better read.
