It has not been easy for me to write disparagingly of von Schubert over the past five years, but since 1999 the quality here has not been up to the reputation of the estate. Fortunately, Carl von Schubert recognized that something needed to be done and, among other things, hired Stefan Kraml, who came here from the Othegraven estate on the Saar, to help manage the property. Vintage 2004 hinted at a renaissance, and the comeback has taken a more concrete form in 2005. In fact, this is the finest vintage here since 1998. Not only that:this is the best selection of wines produced on the Ruwer this year. Welcome back! (Valckenberg International, Tulsa, OK) Also recommended: 2005 Maximin Grunhauser Abtsberg Riesling Spatlese Trocken (86), 2005 Maximin Grunhauser Abtsberg Riesling Feinherb (87), 2005 Maximin Grunhauser Abtsberg Riesling Kabinett #25 (87) and 2005 Maximin Grunhauser Abtsberg Riesling Spatlese #26 (89).
