Under the guidance of Dr. Carl-Ferdinand von Schubert, this beautifully located estate in Grunhaus became the benchmark for quality on the Ruwer, and in some vintages for the whole of the Mosel. For decades one could buy the wines with their distinctive label almost blind.Since 1999, however, quality has not always been up to the reputation of the estate. The new winemaker Stefan Kraml, who came here last year from von Othegraven, seems to be putting things back on track, though. The 2004s are still far from the glories of the past, but the estate appears to have consolidated its position, and certain wines show the promise of bygone days.In particular, the kabinett is an excellent example of its kind for this vintage on the Ruwer.(Valckenberg International, Tulsa, OK) Also recommended: 2004 Maximin Grunhauser Abtsberg Riesling Spat lese Trocken (85), 2004 Maximin Grunhauser Abtsberg Riesling (85), 2004 Maximin Grunhauser Abtsberg Riesling Spatlese #17 (88).
