Mauro Veglio continues to impress. Today, the wines are made with more measured approach to farming, especially with regards to green harvesting. Gentler winemaking and an overall move towards greater nuance in the wines is evident. In recent years, Mauro and Alessandro Veglio have converged their styles so that the range is more consistent than it was in the early days after the pair combined their estates.
In 2020, the main part of the Nebbiolo harvest started on October 1 with Paiagallo and Gattera and wrapped up on the 10th with Castelletto, with some smaller parcels for the straight Barolo that came in on the 15th. The wines were vinified in steel. Malos were also done in tank. After settling, the wines were racked into oak by December. Aging was done in French oak (20-25% new), except the Paiagallo and Serralunga Barolos, which were aged in cask and also saw longer fermentations. As good as the 2020s are, my impression is that the best is yet to come.
