I was deeply impressed with the 2018 Barolos I tasted from La Spinetta, largely because Giorgio Rivetti's vineyard in Grinzane Cavour is not located in an especially privileged spot in vintages like 2018. The memories of what this area looked like in 2014 are still clear in my mind. Given all that, the 2018s are terrific. Naturally, the wines are on the lighter side relative to most years, but they are also very nicely balanced. As always, the wines show a fair amount of new French oak. It's a style that works here.
