There is plenty to admire in these new and forthcoming releases from Hourglass. As is the case throughout Napa Valley, I find the 2016s more interesting as a group than the 2015s. Among other things, the 2015s are all deeply marked the low yields and extreme heat of the year to the degree that the differences between the wines aren't as evident as they usually are. The 2016s, on the other hand, offer greater delineation.

Jeff Smith and Tony Biagi have engineered quite a turnaround at Hourglass over these last few years. The bottled 2014s represent another strong vintage here, although the wines have tightened up quite a bit post bottling. I found the 2015s raw, backward and not fully formed, as was the case at a number of properties throughout the valley. That's not entirely surprising given that fermentations were very slow in 2015.
