Tony Biagi continues to do terrific work at Hourglass, where he and proprietor Jeff Smith have brought the wines back a bit from the more opulent style that preceded Biagi's arrival in 2012. The wines still have plenty of depth and richness, but they aren't as sweet as they once were. Two thousand thirteen is a successful vintage here. I am quite surprised by how much some of the wines have softened over the last year. The 2014s are more savory and mineral-driven than the 2013s. It will be interesting to see if they follow a similar trajectory over the coming year. Lastly, readers will want to take note of the new 36-24-36 Blueline Estate Red Wine, a barrel selection of the estate's best fruit.

Hourglass is one of the more remarkable turnaround stories in Napa Valley. Proprietor Jeff Smith and winemaker Tony Biagi have done a terrific job in giving these wines a little more identity than they had previously. Hourglass works with two estate vineyards; the Blueline property is in Calistoga, basically across the street from Three Palms, while Hourglass itself is in St. Helena. The 2012s capture all of the potential I sensed from barrel last year. Biagi chose to rack the 2013s a little later than normal, which meant the wines were still a bit awkward when I tasted them in October of this year.
