Hourglass is one of the more remarkable turnaround stories in Napa Valley. Proprietor Jeff Smith and winemaker Tony Biagi have done a terrific job in giving these wines a little more identity than they had previously. Hourglass works with two estate vineyards; the Blueline property is in Calistoga, basically across the street from Three Palms, while Hourglass itself is in St. Helena. The 2012s capture all of the potential I sensed from barrel last year. Biagi chose to rack the 2013s a little later than normal, which meant the wines were still a bit awkward when I tasted them in October of this year.

What a difference a year makes. Proprietor Jeff Smith felt he needed an onsite, full-time winemaker, so he recruited Tony Biagi, who had been at Plumpjack. Together Smith and Biagi embarked on a project to move the Hourglass wines a little closer to center than they had been under the direction of Bob Foley. Today the vines are stressed much less than in the past, the fruit is picked earlier and the wines have more energy. I first tasted the 2012 this past April, when it was clear the wines were going to be gorgeous. My October tastings confirmed that, as did my first look at the 2013s, wines that are full of promise. While I have always found the wines Bob Foley made at Hourglass to be too ripe and heavy, there is no denying the best wines have aged beautifully, as recent bottles of the 1998 and 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate amply proved. Readers who want to learn more about recent developments at Hourglass might want to check out my recent video interview with Jeff Smith and Tony Biagi.
