In 2013, Johannes Hasselbach officially took the reins of this estate from his globetrotting father Fritz. It has been a slow transition, but the past few vintages have shown a clarity, depth and liveliness that had occasionally been lacking before. Willing to take risks, Hasselbach has been experimenting with wild fermentations in amphorae buried in different vineyards to ensure that the flora are not from his cellar, but only from the site on the label. His goal is to raise the bar in terms of quality without losing the playful charm that Gunderloch’s Rieslings have always had. The prototype is the dry 2013 Riesling that he named als wärs ein Stück von mir (as were it a part of me). Watch this space!
