"I was in the States the second week in September," relates Fritz Hasselbach, "and every day my wife Agnes was e-mailing me pictures of the grapes. These began to look more and more distressing, as there was already rot. Finally I said to [my importer] Rudi 'Enough! You can go on without me. I have to catch the next plane home.' As soon as I got there, we started picking. And for two weeks, all we did was pick out the rotting fruit to protect the rest. Only in that way was it possible to launch a real harvest in our vineyards, in early October. But everywhere I looked, grapes were rotting. It was terrible." The enormous effort paid off in yet another of the seemingly endless progression of good to outstanding vintages at Gunderloch. (Rudi Wiest)
