It would seem that the hard-working husband-and-wife team of Fritz and Agnes Hasselbach can do no wrong in the vineyards or the cellar. The '97s here totally transcend the limitations of the vintage. "1997 was perfect for dry wine," says Fritz Hasselbach, "because there was no botrytis. Everything was healthy, with harmonious but at times really quite high acidity. " In short, it was easy. Right! Try telling that to a good 70% of the other growers whose dry wine collections I tasted, Fritz. True, when it comes to sweet wines, even though the Hasselbachs picked extremely late ("the others had all finished") there wasn't enormous opportunity for the selective picking of fruit with stratospheric must weights or botrytis, a proclivity to which one has become accustomed here. The Hasselbachs' wines from the sister estate Balbach were also enormously successful, but I omit notes on these because at press time it was uncertain whether they will be marketed in the U.S. (Rudi Wiest)
