Winemaker Ed Kurtzman told me that after "a ridiculous amount of work in the vineyards and brutal sorting," the 2011 pinots have emerged with plenty of freshness and, especially, spiciness, which he calls "the the overriding signature of the vintage." He said that the poor fruit set following spring frosts and the cold summer meant fewer as well as smaller grapes than usual and that the fruit that made it through was perfectly ripe. "They're wines to drink while you wait on your '10s and '09s, for sure" he said, adding that they also attained lower alcohol numbers across the board, thus enhancing their drinkability.
