Associate winemaker Brian Buffington told me that he's keen on the results attained by heritage, or heirloom, pinot clones because "they offer better complexity than the big fruit you get from Dijon clones." In fact, owners Akiko and Ken Freeman chose to plant their own estate vineyard, above their home on the west side of Sebastopol, to Calera and Swan pinot clones. The wines here continue to move toward a more precise style and 2010 was a vintage that Buffington said "clearly favors brightness and red fruit over richness and darker fruit, which you definitely get from '09."
