Michel Tardieu told me that he purchased less than half as much wine from the north in 2008 as in 2007 but that he was pleasantly surprised by the freshness of the fruit from the south. "Thanks to the mistral, no question," he explained. As of 2009 Dominique Laurent is officially no longer involved with the Tardieu-Laurent negociant project in any fashion, but he has actually been out of the picture for almost five years now. The Tardieus are in the midst of deciding on the new name for their company.

Bastien Tardieu told me that his family's definition of 'Vieilles Vignes' is fluid. Since his father Michel is now 51 years old, "'Vieilles Vignes' requires that the vines be 52 or older. And next year it will mean 53, and so on. Imagine if Michel makes it to 100. We'll have a really hard time finding old vines. " Bastien told me that the tannin levels in 2007 in the south are virtually identical to those of 2005, but that the fruit is sweeter so the impression is more gentle. "They will be very long-lived but accessible far earlier than the 2005s, which need to be forgotten for a really long time. " (Wilson-Daniels, St. Helena, CA) Also recommended: 2007 Saint-Peray Vieilles Vignes (87?), Cotes-du-Rhone Guy Louis (87), 2007 Rasteau Vieilles Vignes Cotes du Rhone Villages (88-91).
