WinemakerFritz Miesbauer has been joined by an equally young Rainer Wess as co-director of what one is tempted to call the world's best wine cooperative. quot;It was an interesting year, with extreme highs and lows," says Miesbauer. quot; You couldn't really speak about good botrytis," he added, and the Weingartner team was at pains to remove all taints of rot. A high percentage of fruit was sold off in bulk to bolster the quality of what was ultimately bottled. The Federspiel wines were typically brought in in mid-October and the harvest of Smaragd began early in November. This is not a year that emphasizes refinement here, and the results are less consistently fine than in most recent vintages. Several Auslese-like 2000s labeled "Exceptional Reserve," that brought together fruit from various top sites, tended to wear their residual sugar and rather opaque botrytis awkwardly. Nevertheless, the most successful of these 2000s are, like all the best wines from the Freie Weingartner, imposing, intense and very fairly priced.
