Romain Taupenot owns vineyards in both the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits, so he saw it all, from the punishing hail that hit the south to the dismal weather during flowering that further decimated yields. Taupenot calls 2012 the hardest vintage he has ever seen. The Taupenot Merme style is built on texture and volume above all else. Those qualities are very much in evidence here. Even in more normal years, many of the domaine's parcels are affected by millerandage and coulure, which is even moreso the case in 2012. I tasted all of the 2012s from tank, with the exception of the Clos des Lambrays, which was still in barrel. Overall, this is a very strong set of wines. I also tasted Romain Taupenot's new negoce wines, but I caught them at an awkward stage where they weren't at all expressive.
