Niellon starting harvesting on August 30, a Saturday morning following some rain the previous evening. It also rained a bit Saturday afternoon, so Niellon picked up again on Monday. Niellon describes the 2003s as "combining the climate of California and the terroir of Burgundy who knows what that will give?"I found these wines a bit flaccid, but the 2002s were equally underwhelming in the context of the earlier vintage. It's possible I caught the '02s at an awkward stage. But having enjoyed a spectacularly concentrated, minerally, wonderfully fresh bottle of Niellon's 1985 Batard-Montrachet the week after I returned from Burgundy I can't help thinking that today's wines from this estate are considerably less convincing than they were prior to 1998.
