Niellon reported that yields were a bit lower in 2001 than in the previous year. He told me there was little or no problem with rot in 2001 and that the wines are better and fresher than the '99s. Grape sugars were in the high 12.5% to 13% range, superior to those of 2000, and the wines after moderate chaptalization will be about 13.5% in bottle. Drink the premier crus after five or six years - or now," says Niellon of his 2000s and 2001s.

Michel Niellon was one of several growers I visited who genuinely appeared to prefer their 2000 whites to their '99s. "I didn't start picking until Saturday [five days after the ban de vendange then harvested in five or six days," he told me. The grapes were richer in sugar than in '99, especially on the hillside, which suffered less from drought and heat during the humid summer of 2000." Niellon said that he thought some of his 2000s may also be more concentrated than the corresponding '99s, and that he preferred the new vintage to '98 ("lacking in volume") and '97 ("too flabby and lacking in spine").
