"Today, we're seduced by the palette of aromas and the exuberant fruit of the 2006s," said Ghislaine Barthod, "but the wines also have good balance and structure for pinot. At the beginning, the wines seemed to resemble the 2000s," she went on. "But the acids are better and the wines are more complex." The skins were not particularly thick in 2006, noted Barthod, but there wasn't too much juice in the grapes. Incidentally, Barthod told me that her Charmes and Beaux-Bruns holdings were the most affected by hail among her many premier crus; she added that Amoureuses and Musigny were even more affected by hail, but she does not own vines in these prime vineyards-a fact that fans of this domain believe is an extreme injustice. When I asked Barthod if she could compare 2005 to a past vintage, she responded that she started making wine in 1986 but had a hard time finding a comparable vintage to 2005. "Maybe 1978," she offered.
