Two thousand eight is not a vintage you want to hold onto for too long, Brigitte Clusel-Roch told me, "but sometimes lighter years that are well-balanced can surprise you. Look at 2002. No, they're not special wines, but they can be pleasant and easy to drink. Not great doesn't mean bad." She likes 2007 for its "structure without hardness. They're like a cross between 2006 and 2005 and should drink well for at least 10 years. And if you drink them young, you should decant them so that they can show their fruit."

Brigitte Clusel told me that 2007 was looking to be similar to 2006, adding that while both vintages will provide early drinking pleasure, they are balanced for a slow, graceful evolution. "There was nothing excessive in 2006," she added. "It's a year of finesse and precision. People often forget that lighter wines, if they're balanced, can age extremely well. " She then made her point by pouring me, blind, her 2002 Cote-Rotie classique, which is bright red, shows spicy red berry aromas and comes across as intriguingly sweet, tannin-free and elegant. Around 3%-4% viognier is part of the blend for the red wines here.
