Ott's wines have garnered lavish praise in the Austrianx000D press and my first visit to this young grower showed why. Working nearly 40 acres mostly in loessx000D soils and almost entirely with gruner veltliner, fourth-generation vintner Ottx000D crafts a range of wines culminating in some quite voluminous, powerful cuveesx000D whose ability to age interestingly at least in the short run he amplyx000D demonstrated to me. Skin contact,x000D gentle unpumped movement of the young wine, and long time on the lees are allx000D part of the Ott regimen. The estate isx000D active in propagating selections from the best pre-clonal gruner veltliner tox000D enhance the future quality of this entire region. There are 221 cellars in Feuersbrunn, a town with a population ofx000D just 800, so one can understand why the inhabitants pride their town as a sortx000D of capital of the Wagram. His father'sx000D 1979 Gruner Veltliner Auslese, Ott claims, was the first wine of its type inx000D the Wagram. I can testify to thatx000D wine's excellent qualities after 22 years in the bottle.
