Maurice Barthelmé describes 1997 as "good for everyone—a big, regular harvest."A lot of people had large crops, he added, but the fruit ripened through passerillage "Here the crop was high for riesling but rather low for gewürztraminer. The wines lack the depth and acidity to be great, but they are very agreeable. They're the other extreme after the metallic, flinty '96s, which many people found difficult to understand. But '97 is less my style than '96 or '98."Barthelmé describes '98 as more classic, and best for those who do serious work in the vines. "It a vin de gastronomie " he notes, "between '96 and '97 in style."The fruit in '98 tends to express itself better than in '97, says Barthelmé, adding that '98 showcases varietal character more than terroir I continue to be impressed with Mann's best SGN offerings.
