The clear fruit and ripe tannins of the 2004 vintage resulted from a cool growing season with a good supply of water. August and September were dry-and in lesser sites perhaps slightly too dry-but in the best vineyards these conditions were perfect. "The grapes were allowed to ripen slowly," noted Paul Achs. "We harvested pinot noir ten days later than average, and the entire harvest was finished at the end of October. The volume was very good due to optimal fruit health, which made rejection of imperfect grapes unnecessary." It should be noted that this was a red wine vintage that favored the regional varieties zweigelt, blaufrankisch, pinot noir and St. Laurent. Achs did not bottle a Chardonnay Alte Reben in 2004; this fruit found its way into the white Pannobile blend. A series of Blaufrankisch bottlings includes three single-vineyard wines that were matured in new small oak barrels, and there is also an easy-drinking Blaufrankisch from the Edelgrund vineyard on the market. The 2004 pinot noir from Achs is among the best examples that have ever been produced from this variety in Austria.
