Trained as a anesthesiologist, Dr. Herwig Prodnick changed his name to Jamek when he decided in 2012 to take this prestigious estate into its third generation. His wife is the granddaughter of Josef Jamek, who was one of Austria’s best-known wine personalities until his death in 2011. Before he returned to the estate full-time, he had already completed his enological studies in Krems. But the cellar is still managed by winemaker Volker Mader, who was trained by Josef Jamek and ensures the maintenance of the traditional house style. The better wines here are fermented in stainless steel in order to better control their temperature, then matured in large oak casks, where they often go through malolactic fermentation, which softens the herbal edge on the Rieslings in cooler vintages.
