Christoph Friedrich, cellarmaster at Van Volxem, is among the winemakers who feel lucky to work predominantly with Riesling. “Riesling weathered 2023 well,” he says. Friedrich explains, “The year brought an early budburst, with sufficient rain throughout the season. Harvest, likewise, was early and done within four weeks. Selection was everything. Pinot varieties were tricky, and canopy management was crucial.” Most of the botrytis was not good botrytis. Nonetheless, they did manage to pick a BA in the Geisberg and a TBA in the Scharzhofberg (not tasted, as they were still fermenting). Yields were down to 34 hl/ha vis-à-vis the average yield of 40 hl/ha.
