Michael Cruse makes some of the most distinctive sparkling wines in the United States under his Ultramarine label. The 2013s are a bit riper than some previous vintages, so readers should expect wines that are unusually forthcoming in the early going. The undisputed star among these wines is the Late Disgorged release of the 2010 Blanc de Blancs Charles Heintz Vineyard. Holding wines back is an economic sacrifice, and, frankly, only suited to the very best years. Readers lucky enough to taste one of the 300 bottles of the 2010 are likely to wonder, as did I, why Cruse does not make more of his wines this way. Readers should also make a point of looking at the reds and Pét-nats Cruse makes under his own name at Cruse Wine Co.
