Despite boasting a long track record (by Napa Valley standards), Seavey remains an under the radar gem. The top wines are reliably outstanding, but I find the more modestly priced Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon Caravina every bit as compelling. Winemaker Jim Duane gave the 2016s 40-45 days on the skins, which is on the long side for the state. By contrast, the 2017s saw much shorter macerations. Duane added that in 2017, the berries had nearly 50% less juice than is the norm. Production levels for 2017 will be further impacted by Seavey's decision to only bottle pre-fire lots, which excludes about 50% of the fruit.
