It is safe to say that the quality rebirth of Italian white wine started by Mario Schiopetto in the 1960s. Schiopetto is one of Italy’s truly historic wineries. Today the property is owned and run by Emilio Rotolo, with the winemaking consultant help of Lorenzo Landi. Roughly 190,000 bottles are produced a year from thirty hectares of vines. Rotolo has invested heavily in this winery (he also owns another famous FVG estate, Volpe Pasini). The project also includes rebuilding the Osteria del Pompiere on the estate, a restaurant and country retreat which will ultimately have sixteen rooms. FVG wine lovers will recognize that the name “Osteria del Pompiere” is a kind wink to Mario Schiopetto’s family original job, that of running the original Osteria del Pompiere, where the great Mario cut his teeth on wine, now more than seventy years ago.
