Mario Schiopetto was the man responsible for launching the Italian white wine quality revolution. He bottled his first Tocai wine in 1965 in the classic green Rhine-shaped bottle and Italian white wine was never the same again. His love affair with wine started by observing and working in his father’s osteria, then as a truck driver a job that allowed him to travel far and wide and to gain new experiences. Back in the 1970s and early 1980s, his name was regularly associated with those who first put Italian wine on the quality wine scene; Incisa della Rocchetta, Giacomo Bologna, Ceretto, Antinori, Gaja, and Biondi Santi, for example. Today the estate is owned by Emilio Rotolo (who also owns Volpe Pasini, another famous FVG estate) and farms about thirty-two hectares and produces about 190,000 bottles a year. The Malvasia and Friulano rank with Italy’s best white wines.
