This is a gorgeous set of new releases from Rudd and winemaker Frederick Ammons. Rudd has been through a lot of ups, downs and changes in direction in recent years. Proprietor Leslie Rudd made two wise decisions when he moved farming in house and brought on winemaker Frederick Ammons, who was previously at Bill Harlan's Napa Valley Reserve. Ammons' first wines at Rudd, the 2014s, suggest he is on the right track to unlocking the full potential of this Oakville site. But that will take time. There are no shortcuts when it comes to making world-class wine, especially with regards to both the investment of time and consistency of direction that is required. The greater emphasis on freshness and energy that Ammons has brought to these wines is palpable and also a step in the right direction.
