Rudd is one of the most striking properties in Napa Valley. One look at the gorgeous red Oakville soils in this prestigious corner of the appellation is enough to trigger the imagination. What kind of wines might be possible here? I don't think anyone knows just yet. But proprietor Leslie Rudd has dedicated his considerable enthusiasm and resources to trying to find out. The vineyard redevelopment program is clearly a long-term proposition, but the addition of new winemaker Frederick Ammons seems to be a huge positive. Needless to say, it will be interesting to see how things develop in the coming years here.

I have met few proprietors as committed to quality as Leslie Rudd. Winemaker Frederick Ammons has recently moved over from the Napa Valley Reserve, while the replanting of 8 acres and increased presence of Cabernet Franc continues under the supervision of David Abreu and his team. It's too soon to know for sure where Ammons is going to take Rudd. If I have a critique of the Rudd reds it is that in the past they have been heavily extracted, so I will not be surprised if Ammons opts for a style that is a bit more matched to the personality of these Oakville sites, which are among the finest in the area.
