While Qupe is now partnered with Charles Banks' Terroir Selections group, Bob Lindquist is still very much present and in charge here. Like his longtime stablemate Jim Clendenen, Lindquist seems somewhat bemused by his status as an elder ?? for a new generation of winemakers seeking to make wines that favor elegance over power. "It was never a design," he told me, "but rather a desire to take advantage of some great vineyards and not get in the way." The Qupe wines can come off a bit shy on release, and if one is hell-bent on drinking them young then a decanting is definitely advised. Older bottles continue to prove to me that the wines deserve and reward patience, especially the Hillside roussanne.

Qupe founder Bob Lindquist is one of the early pioneers in Santa Barbara. Over the years the Qupe wines have frankly been inconsistent, with plenty of highs and lows. Lindquist recently sold a majority interest in Qupe to investor Charles Banks. Hopefully the infusion of capital and the other resources that are part of this transaction will be what Qupe needs to get back to making consistently outstanding wines. Once again, this year the Syrahs sit at the top of the hierarchy.
